Hello!
Reid here, checking in after our July volume week.
After mild temperatures the last couple months, summer is now in full swing! With the weather getting warmer and drier, smiles are big, and bodies are tan (while crossing our fingers for no forest fires). This past week was our biggest volume week of the summer, with some of the pro-teamers doing 25+ hours. The way our periodization and training in the summer works is we build up our hours each week, finishing the period with a very big week. This means the weeks before were also high hours as well, thus it is very important to monitor how we feel so as not to overdo it.
The most important thing during these high hours training, is making sure we are well rested. Sometimes when you are doing lower hours, you can get away with a bad sleep schedule and still feel alright, but not in a volume week! Doing lots of hours in the summer means nothing if you are not absorbing the training well. I always make sure to go to bed early on these weeks, because even one night can make you feel pretty poor the rest of the week and not absorb the training well. With double workouts every day on these weeks, you also must make sure you are well rested in-between and fueled up. This year I have tried to be better at nutrition while I am training. This can be as simple as eating a couple bars and filling my water belt up with sports-drink.
We ended this week with a big session in Paradise Valley where we did a rollerski-run combo. This is a super cool area, where we rollerski on a road right at the base of the beartooth-absaroka range. As you can see, this is definitely one of the most picturesque rollerski sessions you can do! After our ski we went right into a run up to an alpine lake, where we all hopped in the water and cooled off before running back down. Certainly, ending our training week on a good note!
We are now in a recovery week with lower hours before we ramp it back up for the end of July. Next up for the pro-team is the Jim Bridger Trail Run on the 31of July. This year we are also adding a rollerski race the day before for the very first time, which is looking to be a super fun event. There is more information about this event on our website and don’t be afraid to sign up!
Stay cool,
Reid
