This past weekend, for the first time in 27 years, freeride skiing and riding returned to the North Bowl at Bridger. The last time a competition was held on this face was in 1997 and included legends like Doug Coombs. The Bridger Ski Foundation’s Freeride team was fortunate enough to host an IFSA 2* competition on this face with Bridger Bowl being gracious enough to let us use it. This event brings together young athletes to showcase their skills on the mountain. This competition offers a unique opportunity for youth to compete in a freeride format, navigating Bridger Bowl’s naturally technical terrain.
In this event, skiers and snowboarders are judged on their ability to choose creative and challenging lines down the mountain. Judges look for a combination of style, fluidity, technical difficulty, and control as competitors weave through cliffs, trees, and rocks. The competition allows participants to express their individual riding styles while also encouraging risk-taking and precision. While the level of difficulty varies depending on the riders' age groups, the course remains demanding enough to test each athlete's skill and confidence.
The event attracts both local talent and riders from outside the area, creating a fun and competitive atmosphere. The event also fosters a strong sense of community, with spectators cheering on the competitors and sharing in the excitement. For many riders, this competition is a stepping stone in their progression and provides valuable exposure to the sport.
Overall, the IFSA 2 star at Bridger Bowl served as a celebration of youthful talent, adventure, and the spirit of freeride skiing and snowboarding.
Huge congrats to all our BSF athletes who competed! And a shout-out to the volunteers and coaches who helped make this event a success.
Special thanks to event sponsors: SMA Architecture, Green Mountain Electric, Greenspace Landscaping, Ski Like a Girl, The Lark, and Bridger Bowl.
