Over the weekend of January 4th, the BSF Freeski Team kicked off our competition season with our first slopestyle and rail jam event at Big Sky resort. We had spent the start of our season talking about how to approach competitions both mentally and strategically with our runs. Since our first comp of the season was very early this year, athletes did not have as much time to work on many big tricks. Athletes utilized what they already knew and incorporated that into their runs.
There were 42 competitors in the event and 15 of them were representing BSF. We weren’t handed the easiest conditions with fresh snow falling in the early morning, which really slowed down the course. Coaches were busy tuning skis at the top of the course to give athletes the most amount of speed possible to clear the jumps.
Our athletes made the very best of the situation and put down some great runs! Of the 15 BSF athletes competing we had 11 on the podium! It was great to see some of our athletes competing for the first time ever and making it to the podium. Kaden Engstrom was one of those, throwing down a 360 off the first jump, to a misty 720, to a front 450 off the up rail , a backslide on the second rail, and finished his run off with a front 270 off the third rail and taking home the bronze in his age class!
